What pre-shipment inspection is and when you need it

Pre-shipment inspection checks a finished or nearly finished batch before it leaves the factory.

Updated: June 20266 min

When to inspect

The usual timing is 80-100% production complete and before the final balance payment. At this point, defects can still be corrected by the supplier.

What is checked

A PSI normally covers appearance, quantity, dimensions, function, packaging, marking, labels and carton condition. The exact checklist should be agreed before the visit.

What the report should decide

A useful report does not just list photos. It should state whether the batch is accepted, rejected or accepted with conditions, and show the evidence behind that decision.

When PSI is not enough

For high-risk categories, add during-production control, lab testing or loading supervision. PSI is a strong final gate, not a replacement for every control point.

Summary

Use PSI before the goods leave China, especially before paying the final balance or booking shipment.
